There are a lot of different ways to write. What works for one may not work for you. That is why there are so many different kinds of coaches globally—me being one of them.
You may have to try ten different ways before you find the one that works for you. It is why it’s hard for a writer to give away their secrets because their secrets may not work for anyone but them.
I have preached to start with 1000 words a day, and I still think that if you have backed yourself into writer’s block, it’ll help you edge your way out of it.
It also helps to get your book started because writing a book is a big project. Breaking things down on a big project takes away the overwhelm.
Beyond The 1000 Words
If you’ve been writing 1000 words a day for a while now, you may want to increase the word count. You’ll then have to try a different strategy.
I’ve always talked about a plan for your book or an outline. But I have discovered that there are other writers than have none. If they know their ending, it stunts their productivity. I could never write that way. So, of course, I’m going to continue to suggest the outline, beats, or at the very least to know where you’re story is going.
If letting the story tell itself works better for you, then, by all means, do that. I want what works best for you.
There is no way that a writer can give you their roadmap. The only way you can discover what works for you is to get started and tweak as you go.
Another constant suggestion I hear is to write the entire book before editing, and I’ve talked about it on this blog. But as I’m writing my new upper middle-grade book, I realize that I’d rather edit as I go. This way, I’ll have the book close to done by the time I type The End.
After you’ve written your book, it may not interest you to go back over the manuscript again and again. If you think that you can keep moving forward by editing as you go, this will solve that problem.
When I was writing for a small publisher, it was torture to go through the edits with an editor. They would do their revisions, I would approve or disapprove them, and then they would do it again at a minimum of four times. That didn’t count for the times I went through it before I submitted the finished product.
Editing In A Different Way
You can hire an editor, or you can maybe find one on Fiverr. However, make sure you know what you are buying on Fiverr. But when I wrote Sympathy Dance, the only romance left on Amazon, I sent in a specific number of words to Laurie at Laurie’s place. She runs an editing class called Yellow Highlighter class.
It’s is a lengthy way to edit your book. At that time, you paid for the number of words you wanted to submit. I did five hundred words. And she would act like an editor and edit and make suggestions on how to make the story stronger. Once we were satisfied, I could send in five hundred new words to edit. They could be submitted to her every day, Monday through Friday. The time frame would last for about 30 days. Then the next month, I would buy your edited word count choice again.
I see now she has changed it up a bit to have the writer submit 7000 words three times in the month. Fair warning, though, she books up fast, and at the time I write this blog, she is booking for May of 2021.
To have a book edited, you need to write the book first. Each stage of writing, you’ll need to be disciplined to finish. It’s never going to write nor edit itself.
Writing is enjoyable if you have a desire to write, but it’ll never be easy. There are a lot of stages that need your attention. After writing the book, you’ll need edits, and then once published marketing.

Back To Basics

Several times I find myself deciding on a path. As I start on one course, my ego will pull me in a different direction before I have even given that path a chance. Then I’ll switch directions. But the truth is I’ll never know if it would work.
When this happens, I feel overwhelmed too. That is when I know that I need to stop and go back to the basics. It’s a way for me to reassess, go back to the beginning, and judge where I took the wrong turn. I simplify the steps and start over.
Don’t let the noise keep you from hearing what you know is right. One easy step will lead to another.
